Te Pane o Horowi

The carved Pouwhenua represent the ancestors who arrived over 600 years ago on the Tainui Waka.
Hoturoa – Commander of the Tainui Waka
Taikehu – Chief and key ancestor for the Ngai Tai people
Horowi – Chief who settled at Tamaki Head naming this point Te Pane o Horowi.

The Point was named Achilles Point back in 1940 when the Auckland Council decided to honour the New Zealand-crewed ship
HMS Achilles that defeated the German cruiser Graf Spee in the 1939 Battle of the River Plate, the first major
naval battle of World War II.
