After the rain, a rainbow over Bastion Point.

The obelisk you see on top is dedicated to Michael Joseph Savage –  New Zealand’s first Labour Prime Minister (1935-1940) and the founder of the Welfare State. Considered at the time to be an extravagance in wartime, the memorial was officially opened in March 1943.  It is built on the site of a former gun emplacement dating from the “The Russians are coming Scare” of the 1880’s.
