Karaka Bay is a quiet sandy beach at the tip of Auckland’s eastern suburbs. It has an historical importance however, as it was here that in 1840, New Zealand’s first Governor, William Hobson, met with local Maori chief Ngati Poa to collect signatures to New Zealand’s founding document – the Treaty of Waitangi. Rangitoto Island provides the backdrop.
